Inspiré du fleur d’abaca – la source du fibre abaca – « Cœur d’abaca » est une pièce sculpturale qui incarne l’évolution de l’artisanat. Conçu par Maricris et Jaime Brias, cela rend hommage à la connexion naturelle et la maîtrise du tissage T’nalak du tribu T’boli.  

À trois couches, cette œuvre représente différentes étapes du processus du tissage. L’externe, formé d’abaca cru trempé du pulpe, symbolise la préparation matérielle.

La couche intermédiaire, avec des fines bandes de T’nalak, reflète la transformation des fibres à travers la technique méticuleuse de teinture et tissage ikat. La couche interne, comprenant des bandes de T’nalak aux motifs élargis, signifie l’apogée de l’art et la tradition. Ascendant en forme dynamique, l’œuvre reflète la croissance organique de la nature, symbolisant la continuité et l’évolution culturelle. « Cœur d’abaca » attrape la synergie entre artisans autochtones et créateurs contemporains philippins, célébrant à la fois l'héritage et l’innovation.

‍For this piece, I experimented with handwoven raffia polyester textiles from Cebu, pleating it and creating circular conic shapes resembling flowers. I wanted to create larger than life imaginary flowers. To contrast with the softness of the fabric, I collaborated with Industria Edition for metal works.

Pour cette œuvre j’ai expérimenté sur des textiles de raphia polyester tissés par main à Cebu, en les plissant pour créer des formes coniques circulaires ressemblant à des fleurs. Pour faire contraste avec la douceur du tissu, j’ai collaboré avec Industria Édition pour la métallurgie.

‍The concept of the sculpture is from an experience from an unreciprocated love.  

There was a moment where I fell in with someone and reimagined them into a constellation, a group of stars that can only admire from a far. And imagine what if his constellation would suddenly be beside mine. A universe that we can call ours.  

A moment where I give form to emotions like the cosmos above.

The 3-piece sculpture was made through an integration with 3D technology and a traditional craft of Cebu, shell inlay. The sculpture is inlaid with three shells, white mother-of-pearl, yellow mother-of-pearl, and white Cabebe shell. The patterns are whimsical and brass sheets will then be added.

Le concept de la sculpture se départ d’une expérience d’un amour non réciproque.​ ​

Il y eu un moment où je suis tombé avec quelqu’un et je leur ai réinventé en forme de constellation, un amas d’étoiles qu’on ne pourrait apprécier qu’à distance. Et imaginez donc si sa constellation se trouverait soudain à côté du mien. Un univers qui nous est propre.​ ​

Un moment quand je donne forme aux émotions comme le cosmos au-dessus.​

La sculpture en trois pièces est créée d’une intégration de technologie 3D et un artisanat traditionnel de Cebu, l’incrustation de coquille. L’œuvre est incrustée de trois coquillages: nacre blanc, nacre jaune, et coquille de cabibe blanc. Des feuilles de laiton seront ajoutées aux motifs ludiques.​

Creators' Notes:
‍This piece explores the balance between growth and natural degradation, inspired by the cycle of life— like spring and autumn, or beginnings and endings. The woven discs, made from cogon grass, wax thread, and bamboo beads, are created by women, daughters, mothers, and sisters, from a farming community in Negros who are deeply familiar with the seasons of planting and harvesting. The micro landscape also features the discs resting on a plant-like brass structure that appears to grow out of the whimsical mound.

The contrast in colors shows the push and pull between growth and decay; a reflection of how nature constantly evolves, and how people who live off the land understand that both are necessary parts of life. Each crafted piece reflects the distinct story and technique of its maker, creating a direct connection between viewer and artisan. It shows that every thread is the result of real experience, shaped by individual hands and the lives behind them.

Cette pièce porte sur l’équilibre entre la croissance et le déclin naturel, inspiré du cycle de vie –– printemps et hiver, début et fin. Les disques tissés de l’herbe de cogon, fil de cire et perles en bambou sont fabriqués par des femmes, filles, mères, et sœurs d’une communauté d'agriculteurs au Negros, bien versées dans les saisons de plantation et de récolte. Parmi ce micro-paysage les disques se reposent sur des structures en laiton végétales qui semblent pousser de la butte fantasiste.

Le contraste des couleurs démontre l’oscillation entre la croissance et le déclin; une réflection de l'évolution constante de la nature et l’entente de cette dualité nécessaire parmi ceux qui vivent de la terre. Chaque fabrication reflète l’histoire et la technique particulière du créateur, fournissant un lien entre spectateur et artisan. Chaque fil se déroule d'une expérience véritable, formé par des mains individuelles et les vies qui les dirigent.

‍Created for the show Revelation, this piece reflects my journey with Abaca, a material deeply tied to my roots. Coming from the Bicol region, the world’s largest producer of Abaca, I developed a profound connection to this remarkable fiber, immersing myself in its textures, strengths, and subtle nuances.

In this work, I seek to push the boundaries of Abaca, transcending its traditional applications, reimagining it with a modern, minimalist approach. Devoid of color but adorned with intricate detail, the object presents the material in its purest, most natural state -- a quiet tribute to its innate beauty and resilience.

Abaca is more than just a medium. It carries with it stories of heritage, strength, and transformation. Through this piece, I allow Abaca to speak for itself, inviting viewers to experience its understated power and enduring versatility from a contemporary lens.

Créé pour le salon Révélation, cette pièce reflète mon voyage avec l’abaca, un matériel profondément lié à mes racines. Venant du région du Bicol, le premier producteur mondial d’abaca, j’ai développé un lien profond avec cette fibre remarquable en me plongeant dans ses textures, pouvoirs, et nuances subtiles. ​​

Dans ce travail je souhaite repousser les frontières d’abaca, transcendant ses applications traditionnelles, en le réinventant dans une approche minimaliste et moderne. Dépourvu de couleur mais orné en détails complexes, l’objet présent le materiel dans son état pur et naturel –– un hommage sérène à sa beauté et résilience innée.​​

Abaca est plus qu’un médium. Elle apporte avec elle les histoire de l'héritage, puissance, et transformation. A travers cette pièce je permettra l’abaca de parler pour elle-même, en invitant les spectateurs à vivre son pouvoir discret et versatilité persistante d’une point-de-vue contemporaine.

‍Kaleidoscope captures papillons in play, flowing together in indigo flashes patterning the wind that carries them. Each papillon was carefully hand hammered and sheared to imbue paperlike lightness in the steel. Filipino natural silk envelopes the flow in touches of indigo dyed with the shibori tie-dying technique. The elements of the piece converge to form a harmonic “kaleidoscope” of indigo hues. Light reflects off the steel forms while permeating the silk, inviting viewers of the piece to experience the indigo dance between light and shadow–a contemplation on the magic and strength of community in the flow of life.

Kaléidoscope capte des papillons en jeu, oscillant ensemble en éclairs d’indigo façonnés d’après le vent qui les portent. Chaque papillon est martelé et cisaillé soigneusement pour rendre l’acier aussi léger que du papier. La soie naturelle philippin enveloppe le flux en touches d’indigo teints avec la technique shibori. La lumière se reflète sur les formes d’acier tout en pénétrant la soie, invitant le spectateur à ressentir la danse en indigo entre lumière et ombre–une contemplation sur la magie et la puissance des communautés dans le flux de la vie. ​
