Making Design Count is the Philippines’ first design economy research and study to map the Philippine design economy in support of the Philippine Design Competitiveness Act of 2013 (Republic Act No. 10557).
This research initiative has built an evidence-based and robust case on the state and impact of the Philippine design industry through analysis of design's economic and social contribution, mapping the design innovation ecosystem of the country's key design cities and sectors, and co-designing emerging design policy actions through nationwide stakeholder consultations which involved document reviews, surveys, roundtable discussions, and workshop sessions.
Based on the results of this trailblazing Making Design Count research, the Philippines' design economy in 2020 employed around 705,000 people, which generated PHP2.9 trillion ($49.4 billion) in turnover, and PHP1.2 trillion ($20.4 billion) in Gross Value Added (GVA), accounting for 1.8% of total national employment and 6.6% of national GVA. This proves that the design sector makes a significant but often unrecognized impact in the Philippine Economy.
The Shaping Cities Through Design report is an extension to the Making Design Count report which explores the design innovation ecosystems shaping nine (9) Philippine cities and delves into how design fuels growth across industries, from the design sector itself to urban development.
The report aims to offer actionable recommendations for local governments, serving as a planning guide for integrating design into development plans, investment programs, and budgets. It illuminates the transformative power of design to create vibrant, inclusive, and sustainable communities.
